Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of self- efficacy, self- esteem, health
locus of control, sick role behavior and metabolic control in patients with diabetes and to
identify the relationships among those variables.
The subject of the study were composed of 204 NIDDM patients from 2 hospitals, who
were visiting the outpatient clinic in Taegu.
In dat a analysis, an SPSS/ PC+ program was utilized for descriptives and correlation.
The results are as follows.
1. The mean score for the self- efficacy was 1345.00, for self- esteem was 27.62, for the
internal health locus of control was 28.82, for the chance health locus of control was
20.69, for the powerful others health locus of control was 28.96, for the sick role
behavior was 50.46, for the metabolic control was 7.63.
2. Ther elationships between s elf- efficacy, self- est eem, health locus of control and sick role behavior wer e significant . sick role behavior were significantly related to selfefficacy (r=.3274, p=.000), to self- est eem(r=.1830, p=.004), to internal health locus of
control(r=.2890, p=.000), to powerful others health locus of control(r =.2240, p=.001).
3. The relationship between sick role behavior and metabolic control(r =- .1288, p>0.01)
was not significant.
The result suggest that for improvement in sick role behavior nursing intervention needs
to directed at promoting self-efficacy and it needs to continuing research about the other
variables related to sick role behavior and metabolic control.
